Seat Belts

Seat belt laws are divided into two categories:master andsecondary. Primary seat chugalug laws allow law enforcement officers to ticket a driver or rider for non wearing a seat belt, without any other traffic offense taking place. Secondary seat belt laws land that police enforcement officers may issue a ticket for not wearing a seat belt only when there is some other citable traffic infraction.

  • 15 stateshave secondary laws for adult front seat occupants.
  • 39 states, D.C., and ii territories have laws enforcing rear seat chugalug use. Of these:
    • 17 states, D.C. and two territories take primary enforcement for all occupants.
    • v states take primary enforcement for youth.
    • eleven states include rear seats as secondary enforcement. 3 of these are states with primary seat belt laws for front seat occupants. 6 are states with secondary laws for adult front seat occupants.
  • ten states do not accept laws enforcing rear seat belt apply.
    • Of states with primary front seat belt utilise laws, eleven states and the Virgin Islands practise not include rear seats
    • Of states with secondary front seat belt employ laws, nine states do not include rear seats.
  • New Hampshire has enacted neither a principal nor a secondary seat belt law for adults in any seat, although the state does have a primary child passenger safety law that covers all drivers and passengers under eighteen.
